Ah, sweet justice

You know how when you break-up with a boyfriend (or vice versa), you always have the fantasy that the next time you see him you’ll be 10 pounds lighter, looking gorgeous and on the arm of a handsome guy?

And when you finally acknowledge his presence, you’ll be oh-so-gracious and kind all the while behind the polite facade you’re smirking inside and thinking, “Ha! You fool, you could have had all this!”

That’s kind of how I feel today, although it has nothing to do with an ex or my love life. Sadly, when it comes to dating the above scenario never happens…in fact, it’s usually quite the opposite.

But in work, this seems to happen to me more often that not. For example, after ignoring me for two months while they looked for other candidates, the California company I interviewed at in December came back to me last week to ask if I was still interested in the position.

I think the company HR representative was surprised when I told her I’d reconsidered and I wanted to withdraw my name from the running. This opinion was reinforced when I saw that they’d re-posted the position online despite telling me they were ready to make a final decision by the end of the week.

So the same day I spoke to them, an article in an A-list publication finally came out featuring my company and highlighting our amazing customer service. I’d worked on pitching the journalist, media training and arranging interviews for over a month, so I was thrilled when it finally hit the newsstands. Especially because it’s a very positive article and the publication is widely read.

I realized just how widely read when I received a congratulations email from the VP of marketing with whom I’d interviewed in California. She had been forwarded the article by her HR department, saying this was the kind of exposure they wanted and how wonderful such a piece would be for the company.

And I’d done it…only not for their company because they took too long to scoop me up. It may be immature, but it sure feels good. :-)
