Job dilemma – advice welcome!

January 16th, 2009

Some of you may remember I interviewed in December for a new job in California, and after a long week of nail-biting they came back and said they were going to continue to interview other candidates.

I have yet to hear back from them, but in the time that’s passed I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really want the job anyway (my reasons here).

However, just yesterday I saw a PR position posted by this same company for a different property in their portfolio. The new position is based in San Diego and would oversee regional PR efforts – two big positives in my book.

Thus, my dilemma. Would it be bad etiquette to apply for the new position even though I’m technically still in the running for the other one?

And if I do decide to apply, should I:

a) Just submit my resume online and not mention anything to the folks I’d interviewed with previously?

b) Call up the company’s corporate recruiter (one of the people who I spoke with before) and express my interest in the position?

c) Wait until they call about the first position – and likely tell me they decided to go with another candidate – and then express my interest? Unfortunately, I have no idea when that might be so this option could be risky…

I’ve never been in this position before and I don’t want to step on any HR toes, but quite honestly the new position is more up my alley. Of course, salary was an issue before and it could be again, but the only way I figure I’d find that out is by inquiring directly.

So, readers, any advice for me?

For me, I’d apply to it anyway. *shrug* What’s the harm? That they will know you want to go for the other position as well?

I don’t see any bad in it, other than they might feel miffed that they wanted you in the ONE position and not the other.

Uh.. win win in my eyes :)

Oh and it means you’re really into working for the company. Always a bonus.

Just don’t send your resume 5 times for the same position. I knew a guy who did that. LOL

@Fabulously Broke: Wouldn’t sending my resume 5 times tell them I’m really really into working for the company? :-) Kidding, of course…

Hmmm… tough one. I don’t have any advice but I’m curious to see what happens.

Totally agree with FB. What’s the harm? Besides, if you are better fit for the second position, it’s not stupid to apply for it too!

I’d apply for the position and contact the corporate contact to let them know that you’ve submitted. But yeah, don’t send it in 5 times *LOL*
