Considering a job move…am I crazy?
Yesterday I had a phone interview with a human resources rep from a company I’ve been courting (some might say stalking) since July. Everything went well and they’ve asked me to fly out for an in-person interview later this month. But now that the prospect of switching jobs is becoming more serious, I find myself contemplating whether now is the best time to make a big career move, especially since it also involves relocating out of state.
To give more background, I work in the hospitality PR industry and earlier this year I’d sent a letter to the marketing director at a soon-to-open resort asking if she was looking to hire someone with my experience. She was, and although we’ve been in communication ever since, the formal interview process is just now heating up.
There are a lot of reasons I would want this position, but one of the definite negatives is that I would be leaving a well-established company (the known) for a new resort (the unknown) that is opening in what might possibly be one of the worst economic times in decades.
If I am offered the position, I’m also worried my salary negotiations will be waylaid by the doom and gloom of the economy. In boom years, you can sometimes ask for the sky and they’ll give it to you because they know another company is right on their heels with a more lucrative offer. These days, between layoffs and budget cuts, asking for the sky might get you a one-way ticket to the reject pile.
So, am I crazy?
