The waiting game (insert Jeopardy theme song)
So I haven’t heard anything from the company I interviewed with on Monday and I’m started to get a little anxious. I’ve never been the most patient person and this is especially true when it comes to such a potentially life-changing piece of news.
All of this also got me thinking about the parallels between starting a relationship and interviewing for a new job. If you don’t really like the guy, they may not call for a few weeks after the first date and that will be perfectly okay. When they finally do get around to calling, it’s like, “oh yeah, I almost forgot about you.” Conversely, if you really want it to work out because you like the guy, you’ll practically sit by the phone, willing it to ring and for them to be on the other end.
That’s kind-of how I feel right now. Either way, it’s annoying and I wish they’d call.

Last night I went on a third date with a guy who seemed to have potential. Besides the fact he’s probably the most attractive man I’ve ever dated, he has a steady job and a good sense of humor. I had a few concerns(nothing too serious, but things I thought could potentially be dealbreakers in the future) but was willing to give it a try since…well, to be honest, since he’s so attractive. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m shallow sometimes, so unless you’ve never broken up with someone because of their looks, don’t judge.
Anyway we planned to meet up at a swanky magazine launch party downtown. I was chatting with some friends when he arrived, so I didn’t see him until he came up to give me a hug and to say hello. Here’s where the night took a sudden turn for the worst.
Literally his first words after hello were, “So get this, I went on a date last night with this girl and I just ran into her here at the party. But what’s really embarrassing is that I’m wearing the exact same outfit that I wore last night!” To my credit, I kept my features pretty neutral and I forced myself not to look at my friend (who got to hear this wonderful declaration) to see if she was as incredulous as I, for surely I was hallucinating.
But no, we were treated to a five-minute story about how embarassing it was that he was wearing the same outfit – down to the undershirt…I didn’t ask about the boxers – and that it was such a coincidence that his date from last night was at the same party.
Trust me, I had no illusions we were exclusive after three dates and considering his looks, I would guess he’s probably used to dating many women at once. But hearing him tell me so blatantly was a big turn-off (and I won’t even get into the hygiene issue).
As if that wasn’t enough to convince me men are clueless when it comes to dating, my best friend also went out last night with a guy she’s been seeing casually. During our traditional post-date chat, she sympathized with my story and then shared her own.
At the end of dinner, her date whipped out his Blackberry and started typing into it, occassionally glancing at their meal receipt. At first she thought he was texting but he soon explained, “Sorry, I just want to make sure to get these numbers into my budget spreadsheet.” Seriously!? I’m all for being frugal and fiscally responsible, but come on, that couldn’t wait until he got home? According to my friend, her first thought was: “hmm, maybe I shouldn’t have gotten that $9 glass of wine…”
And my mom wonders why it’s so hard to find a quality man these days…
